Match Characters with different personality types for a fun read.
Have the main antagonists simply want to help other normal humans and have the main characters have this heroic gene.
While the habitable planets are sent large rings to connect them to the rest of the systems, areas with that aren’t habitable or can’t be seen are sent small rings. These “dark” systems are the world west and explored by various people since they don’t have to pay into the tax system. However, while they do still receive updates when the rings connect the rings connect far less frequently and are too small for large ships to come through them to resupply. So these frontiersman have to create their own food, energy, water, and etc. without the help of centralized humanity. So this is where the criminals, outlaws, and adventurers go. Plenty of room for western style cowboys and outlaws stories in an otherwise Utopian society.
Regarding the rings they are powered by solar energy, a bit by dark energy which yields usable antimatter that is then annihilated for energy the processes are still not really understood, but are being harnessed usablely and researched heavily. The power from this fuels the gravitation manipulation that creates a wormhole to another gate. The gates are connected via quantum entanglement and that is a small computer detects when the what entangled particle is activating and when the other gate will open and syncs up its gate at the same time. The other gates computer does this as well because both gates have to be opened at the same time otherwise the energy gathered by the gate that opened early would be loss and a connection couldn’t be established.
Due to the control of gravity, artificial gravity make traveling at space speeds and accelerations not affect the passengers. However, at very fast accelerations about 250 Gs the power needed to maintain the artificial gravitation field becomes strained and the effects of the massive acceleration are felt. Different ships have different thresholds. However, at the accelerations that are possible (250G-1000G) most ships can reach extremely fast speeds in seconds. In about 5 minutes they reach about 1% of the speed of light (~300,000 m/s) faster than any other man made object. They can theoretically keep accelerating their engines use antimatter annihilation.
Most ships use antimatter catalyzed fusion propulsion as this is much safer because it requires far less antimatter than a pure antimatter drive. However, for those ships that require speed and have illegally obtained enough antimatter to do so (antimatter production along with deuterium and tritium production for fusion reactors are monopolized and taxed by the government) the antimatter drives power massive accelerations at the risk of extreme explosions in accidental antimatter annihilation.

Book
Once humans figured out how to travel light years instantaneously with anti-matter it became their mission to colonize the galaxy and even the universe. Advances in genetic engineering led to new bodies that could be adapted to a variety of environments. Advances in tech led to biomechanical enhancements that allowed us to reach new heights beyond that of our biological selves. Which then led to an enhancement in engineering that allowed us to build better spaceships, harness energy sources more efficiently, and expanded our knowledge of terraforming which we used to clean and fix our own planet and then completely transform others. Furthermore, perhaps our greatest discovery was the ability to transfer our consciousness from our original body to another medium. Centuries passed and we refined on our knowledge and created a set of guidelines that would allow us to reach our goals and expand our humanity.
All humans must be born unmodified (except for certain genetic conditions) the DNA you are born with is saved so that all subsequent bodies reproduce with that DNA.
You are not allowed to transfer consciousness into a modified body until a period of time has passed that is determined by your planet or confederate government the current age ranges are 25-50.
You are allowed a maximum of 10 offspring and up to 3 clones for your entire lifetime. Clones count as offspring.
You cannot create offspring until you have the appropriate land and money as required by your local planet or confederate government. Generally it is enough land and money for a house, a farm, a lab, and a personal spaceship.
Each world can have a maximum permanent population of about 4 billion not including surrounding bases in their jurisdiction. Once that population is reached more offspring can not be created on that planet. And 100 million people must be chosen to man the expeditions to colonize other habitable but unpopulated planets.
10 million people are required to colonize a planet. They are encouraged to reproduce rapidly, but most save 3 or 4 offspring for a later time. It typically takes about 5-7 generations for a planet to reach 4 billion which is about 100-150 years.
There are about 10 billion worlds that are marked for habitation in the Milky Way. In 2166 Earth had a population of 15 billion and sent 11 billion people off to colonize the stars. 150 years later, 1100 planets were at full population and they sent off explorers to colonize 11,000 new worlds. Then 150 years later 110,000 more worlds were at full population with another 1,110,000 worlds on the way. Then 11,100,000 more worlds, then another 111,000,000, and now we about midway through colonizing 1,110,000,000 additional worlds about 800 years after humanity became a space colonizing race it is nearing the turn of the new millennium humans inhabit 1,222,222,101 worlds with 122,222,100 of them having a full population of about 4 billion and the remaining billion or so sitting around 1.5 billion. Making about 3 quintillion humans or a billion billions or 1 million trillion humans.
All humans get 1,000 credits an Earth month from Earth and the taxes it collects from all planets. Since land and money are requirements for reproducing virtually all humans have land to live on and develop as well as the resources necessary to do so which include a fusion reactor, a 3d printer, and a personal spacecraft. Some planets depending on the wealth also provide a supplemental income in additional to the monthly income on Earth.
Land for the vast majority of planets is not taxed with the notable exception of Earth. However, almost all other goods and services are including food and water. Earthen taxes are charged to the planet governments usually through their confederacy and as a percentage usually 9%. This tax pays for the monthly income, light year tunnels, colonizing vessels, standardization and upkeep of the monetary system, and maintenance and distribution of the repository for human knowledge. Any money not used for those goals is added to the Science Foundation who then distributes it to science projects it’s board deems worthy. Its board is made up of members who represent their confederacy.
Most planets make money from food manufacturing, hydrogen manufacturing and then refinement, metal mining, and metal purification, scientific research and patenting novel alloy or biological mixes. Some planets make significant money on tourism for having spectacular cosmic, biological, planetary, historical or artistic phenomena. Most planets have a GDP of around $250 trillion credits the poorest system has a GDP of only $215 trillion due to their limited resources, but still plenty of money. The richest system is Earth with a GDP of $2 quadrillion due to its historical importance and the jobs it creates from its taxes. The next richest system has a $650 trillion GDP due to its scientific accomplishments including the most popular alloy for personal spaceships and its genetic advancements that now allow all humans to modify their some of their genes internally.
Most systems combine with other systems to create federations or confederacies. Generally one world will spawn 10 worlds and those 10 worlds spawn 10 world’s a piece forming 110 worlds. These were the first confederacies once there were over 100,000 worlds and they couldn’t all be represented efficiently they combined a 3 generations of worlds. That started the 1100 confederacies. Now there about 2500 confederacies that on average represent about 500,000 worlds each. They generally follow the same generational structure with the offshoot world being under the world that begot it. However, some worlds have broken off from their mother world and joined other confederacies or formed their own either out of pride or economic benefit. It is a federalist system and as such systems still generally make and enforce their own laws and due to the vast nature of space and the difficulty in traveling from one system to another the laws that govern a confederacy are usually very few and mostly related to taxes. Confederacies usually charge a small tax of 2-4% to support poorer systems, fund the science programs, recruit from their talent base, and pay their representatives to negotiate with other confederacies and represent them in the grand government.
Local systems laws and customs however, vary greatly. They determine the age when you can first transfer to your new body. They determine the tax of transferring to a new body, the tax on food, what infrastructure to build, which areas are zoned off, what research is done at the local level, what industries are to be encouraged and discouraged etc.

Genetically engineered humans
Humans are essentially androids with computer chip that stores all human knowledge, and computational calculations normal humans can’t do. Humans still can’t transfer memories to a chip and the chip isn’t inserted until after puberty. Also regular teaching methods still teach kids before puberty arithmetic, reading and writing in English, Chinese, and possibly a cultural language from Earth or their colony, basic philosophy, history, the foundation of science, and some social studies. The computer chips do integrate with the eye and ear implants to record video, but only save the information your brain deems important to prevent yourself from going crazy remembering every detail.
Can transfer consciousness to new bodies
DNA now has new letter beyond the 4 A,C,T,G in W, X, Y, Z which are easy to clip and clip out mechanically making editing your gene sequence much easier.
New body has a base model which is between 6’ 4” – 6’ 10” has more dense muscle fibers for more strength and speed.
You also have bones that were ingeniously designed to merge with metal in a triangular pattern for maximum strength and flexibility. Just the bones themselves are actually lighter than normal human bones, but become marginally heavier when mixed with their metal alloy.
Cartilage and muscle from shark was the inspiration for the new joints and fast twitch fibers that significantly increase the strength and flexibility of joints also most joints are designed to be double jointed.
The brain is modified for maximum horsepower, higher density neurons in the prefrontal cortex for problem solving, more neurons in the part of the brain for empathy and for drive. Also the connections between them are amplified for more creativity. The modified humans problem solve quicker, can perform more robust calculations quicker (although unnecessary with the embed computer that can still do most calculations much faster), have a greater capacity for empathy, and have a drive that matches some of the greatest achievers in human history.
Eyes are improved and a thin computer contact allows ability to see across electromagnetic spectrum and zoom in and out as necessary, and on occasion presents information on the heads up display.
Hearing is also improved both genetically and biomechanically and includes small vibrations that can also be detected
Smell and taste is on the level of animals and further with biomechanical enhancements
Tails are also added for an extra appendage normally wrapped around a humans waist, as strong and as flexible as an elephant’s nose and it has its own sensory receptors that pick up on a variety things normal humans wouldn’t, weather and pressure changes, pheromones, and others in a way acting like a bugs antennae.
The new humans skin has a layer of fat underneath it similar to blubber can insulate the body almost perfectly in extreme cold, but also can be broken up to allow the body to be cooled as well. This has the added benefit of giving skin a kind of smooth glow.
The internal organs and mechanisms have also been modified. The heart is much stronger so it beats much slower. The lungs are designed to squeeze much more oxygen out and filter out other gases, also they are enhanced biomechanically as well. So humans can breathe in all sorts of gases and filter out the impurities and get the maximum amount of oxygen with minimal side effects and depending on the gas the nanites might actually break off an O2 molecule from another gas like CO2 to gather the required oxygen.
The stomach, kidneys, liver, and intestines have been modified to be more hardy, but also to deal with more types of foods and toxins via genetics and biomechanics. This allows modified humans to eat almost anything break it down and flush out the waste in an extremely efficient manner. In fact they are so efficient if modified humans only eat food that is traditionally edible they produce waste at a tenth of the rate of normal humans.
Between the modified immune system and the nanities in the body modified humans fight off perfectly any imaginable disease and also catalogue its DNA for upload to the human knowledge database mainframe for future reference. Toxins also filter out or are transformed quickly and efficiently.
The modified body also provides some reprieve from space. It tries to dissolve all gases and water in a thick liquid with a boiling point that isn’t affected by pressure, the bodies insulates itself to keep heat, and the heart keeps blood pressure up. The standard body can survive up to 30 minutes in unprotected space, the body modified specifically for space travel can last up to 12 hours.
Also of note those same functions also work well for deep pressure allowing humans to operate under extreme pressure as well.
Furthermore, humans are able to modify genes for body type, hair type and color, pigmentation, eye color and other small mostly cosmetic features continuously. For instance you could be blue eyed blonde straight haired one day, and the next day have brown eyes and your hair starts coming in brown and curly. You can even have purple skin with blue hair.
You can change from a top heavy body type to a bottom heavy one or even a hourglass body type by changing your metabolism and how your body stores fat. All these effects would take a few weeks or months depending on the change but it could be done.
All engineered humans have an open sexuality that isn’t limited by gender or any other discrimination. They are sexually open by brain design to any adult sentient life.
Although the standard body type is the one most people choose because of its well roundedness and cost sometimes other body types are chosen for function, space traveling humans are generally designed to be much smaller for energy conservation reasons but also more nimble for moving around small spaces, sport bodies vary greatly depending on the sport, and some bodies have cosmetic details and shapes that don’t add any real benefit, but look different such as humans with large antennaes.
It is recommended to change bodies every 50 years. You can change anytime but the government subsidizes your body pays for your body up to 50%, 1% for each year you have your old one. The only exception is your first change from a normal human to an enhanced which are called angels by ordinary humans and the moniker more or less officially stuck. Your first angel body is paid for by the government. However, the amount of time you must spend as an unmodified (genetically at least) human depends on your planet or confederate government it ranges from 25-50 years.
Foldable screens that can get as big as 30” and fold to the size of a post-it. Dominate all computer related activities. Input devices are still around but it uses your thoughts for direction. Also “flash drives” are more or less coins and any storage device can be scanned for assimiliation.
All humans are still born un modified except for genetic defects only their new bodies are allowed to be genetically engineered.
Jet packs proposed by magnetic and/or gravitational forces and helium when those forces are unavailable. They are the primary means of short range terrestrial transportion.
Other vehicles do exist but they vary dramatically by planet and the terrain they traverse.
Fusion reactors are miniaturized to the size of a refrigerator and made available to everyone. Can run on anything but is most efficient for hydrogen and loses efficiencies exponentially by molecular size. For prepared hydrogen it is about .10% efficient, helium .01% efficient, Lithium .001% efficient and so on. Still it takes a maximum 100 g of prepared hydrogen and produces the amount of energy a current automobile uses in 1 year magnitude of 10^10 joules. This amount of energy is more than enough to power all devices and transportation vehicles. In order to produce more energy with one reactor you need a much larger reactor which can produce a 100-1000 times the energy, but are typically used for long distance space ships or city generators (fix conversions)
Solar, wind, geothermal, and hydraulic power efficiencies have also improved to around 70% and solar is woven into metals, clothes and generally everything to keep minimal power going at all times.
Nearly perfect batteries that are 99% efficient are ubiquitous they are what powers most of the smaller devices including jetpacks and computers, spacesuits etc.
Induction charging is also 99% efficient and is how all the biomechanical devices are charged as well as phones and other smaller electronics.
Smart space suits made of smart nano fibers that can heal and adjust themselves and provide perfect protection for any environment from space to even volcanic areas.
Perfect helmet adaptable to all sorts of extremes
3d printers that are the bed rock of city building. They are powered by the generators and can be fed a variety of materials. They build housing materials, roads, office buildings, furniture, and even spaceship parts. Formulas for making almost anything a family needs are readily available. They are usaually are about half the size of a personal spaceship. As such they print out pieces and assembly is still required.
AI is a human’s consciousness transferred to a computer. Sentient computers is still theorized as possible, but deemed inefficient by the amount of energy and how large the computer would have to be and probably undesirable. However, once it was found out human consciousness could be transferred many humans chose to transfer their consciousness to computers. The downsides to that were that you lose your free will and are subject to the commands of the user, but you do get to pick or not pick your tasks and are compensated for them in a usable currency in the virtual world. However, almost all AI chooses to work to have a sense of purpose. However, you keep your personality and when not in use there is a virtual utopia that was built by the AIs that you spend your time in a sort of digital world where you make friends, explore and build. Nonetheless, its popularity as a choice dwindled and is mostly used as a punishment for humans who break the more important laws and are thus banished to be AI. AI is a nearly perfect blend of computational power and human instinct, space navigation, terraforming, and other tasks that require a lot of raw computational power, but also nuanced decision making are perfect for AI. They also give great advice and can add charm to any computerized operation if you can afford them for such mundane use. Some also exist as androids but this is very rare as their robotic bodies generally aren’t as good (for cost reasons) to the physical ones that are created.
Terraforming is a near perfect technology that starts biological life on habitable planets by introducing organisms to clean up the atmosphere and provide nutrients to the ground. Usually its starts with bacteria who survive anaerobically and produce CO2 for plants who use CO2 to grow and create oxygen and from there given time the planet eventually becomes habitable and farmable. Also weather is also influenced to increase rain, reduce calamitous weather, and other helpful things for life.. Generally this a government process since they pay for all the spacefaring equipment including the terraforming job and some of the 10 million colonists are responsible for this. And they continue to monitor the evolution on a planet and jump start it where needed. There is usually a lab with a variety of cultures and material for genetic modification and growth. However, some medium spaceships also have small labs with cultures for small scale terraforming and farms. Terraforming the whole planet takes decades and in certain cases centuries, but typically each planet settling craft forms 10 cities from the 10 million people per voyage and they terraform their own land relatively quicker regardless of the average conditions of the world.
Planet biology, geology and other historical sciences are different on each world and are a funded by the government for exploration, but are also a big hobby for most people as they like to explore new species, rock formations, and materials that evolved on the conditions of their planet, breed them to maximize traits, and if possible attract people form other planets or sell the by products of your planet.
Genetically engineered animals for war.
Personal Spaceships are similar to cars of our age. They fit around 5 people and a moderate amount of luggage are ubiquitous, are used to run quick errands, and are highly personalized. They are generally designed for planet travel, but are also used for limited distance space travel. They are powered by the miniaturized fusion reactors and hold tanks of purified hydrogen fuel usually about 10kg worth which should be enough to transverse the solar system and land and liftoff from 3 different planets. However, generally they share this reactor with their house. However, they are too small for a antimatter gravity drive and so they must dock with long distance ships to travel to different star systems. However, they do manipulate gravity and magnetic fields to make taking off and/or leaving gravity wells much easier.
Medium Spaceships are the workhorses of space economy. They can fit from 10-1000 people depending on its purpose, have cargo holds that can supply cities, or ferry large amounts of raw material. They also serve as the family ship for spacegoing families. When moving planets, they hold the 3D printers, fusion reactors, terraforming materials and possessions of the families on board. Most even have 1 or 2 personal spaceships. Some of the more expensive medium spaceships have a small antimatter drive for limited light year travel. These spaceships are used as trading vessels, short range buses, mining vessels, gambling ships, and many other uses.
Big spaceships for moving millions have enormous fusion reactors to power the ship but use antimatter drives to bend space for light year travel. They are generally small cities that have thousands of crew on board and enough cargo for billions of people. They have a variety of designs, are built in space, will never entire an atmosphere and can require the resources of an entire moon.

Humans for the first two exploration trips and some of the third had not yet perfected the process of transferring your consciousness. Genetic engineering and medical advances had allowed humans to produce a good portion of the modifications available in the new modified humans. However, the cost was highly variable, most people couldn’t afford all the benefits, and it created a haves and have not situation. Furthermore, even a genetically modified body wasn’t immortal and although a significant number of humans used these advances to bridge the gap until consciousness transference was discovered and perfected. Most bodies lasted only about 210 years. So almost all of the original Earthlings who set the plan in motion to colonize the galaxy or at least were alive during that time were dead. Most of the original 1100 colony world’s original population also had died and even most of the founders of their 11,000 colonies had died as well. Nonetheless, many of those who made it to consciousness transference uploaded themselves into AI as that was the original idea a digital life to transcend our physical bodies. This was before it was discovered that AI loses its free will and can only find purpose in serving the living thinning the ranks of the oldest generation amongst the ranks of the living immortals. There are only about 10,000 people living who were born 100 years or more from the discovery of consciousness transference. 100 million of them form a significant portion of the sentient AI programs in existence. Almost all of the 10,000 are amongst the richest humans in existence. All of the 100 million who now make up a good portion of the AI population, gave up their physical wealth to the science foundation to form the AI for science program which partners the human races best scientists with the best AI. They also formed the foundation for the digital utopia AI’s live in when they are not working.

War of the Immortals (Maybe in the Martian Timeline)
There was a war between the most advanced race of humans who develop the technology to transfer your consciousness and memories to any body and they wanted to abolish the egalitarian currency and be appropriately compensated for the advanced form of human they represent. They are significantly more evolved with their new bodies and minds than other humans and have an essence invented immortality . Other humans team up use their resource advantage and bombard those humans with robot armies until they give up. All advanced genetic technology is shared and that starts the super human stage of exploration where you can switch your mind to a more advanced body and mind to go along with all the cyborg type enhancements.
